With state emergency management agencies, the Federal Emergency Management Agency works through regional offices to ensure that the states are prepared for and able to respond to disasters, natural and otherwise.

Region III of the Federal Emergency Management Agency encompasses Maryland, Delaware, the District of Columbia, Pennsylvania, Virginia, and West Virginia. Regional staff work through four divisions: Administration and Resource Planning; Federal Insurance and Mitigation; National Preparedness; and Response and Recovery.
