In June 2010, the Ad Hoc Committee on Sentencing Alternatives, Re-Entry, and Best Practices was established by the Chief Judge of the Court of Appeals.

The Committee considers issues relating to best practices for sentencing alternatives and re-entry, and the most effective methods to screen, evaluate, and sentence offenders so as to ensure rehabilitation and less recidivism while protecting public safety, and improving the potential for ex offenders to have a positive contribution to their community. Also, the Committee researches and proposes strategies to provide adequate funding, resources, and public education for sentencing alternatives, re-entry, and best practices. Further, the Committee may propose changes to rules or programs that improve an ex-offender's chance for re-entry.

Annually, the Committee reports to the Court of Appeals.
