MARYLAND AT A GLANCE

HISTORICAL CHRONOLOGY

MARYLAND IN THE WAR OF 1812

With Maryland as an important front during the War of 1812, many citizens took up arms to defend their homes. Some elected officials yielded their positions to enlist with militia units as well as the regular army. Others retained their public offices, seeing to the needs of those endangered by the War.

Marylanders served the nation in very diverse ways, from privateers to major generals of the U.S. Army. They served on all fronts, supporting the nation, and defending their homes.
